Mies van der Rohe Cantilever Cane Chair - Modern Mid Century Lounge Chair for Living Room, Office & Patio - Durable & Comfortable Design

Mies van der Rohe’s MR chairs were designed in 1927 for the Weissenholf housing development project along with Mart Stam’s cantilever chair.  The chair uses a small gauge tubular steel frame that retains a certain amount of spring, providing extra comfort to the clean design.  The chairs are part of the MR series of seating that exhibits Mies van der Rohe’s first use of bent tubular steel in its design.  It is a marvelous example of Mies’ use of a single closed structural line.

Though an early version of this cantilever chair was available in the Bauhaus colors of red, blue, or yellow, today’s reproductions are finished with polished chrome.

Mies van der Rohe was one of the leaders of the Modern Movement and is widely regarded as a master of furniture design.   Over a period of 50 years, Mies van der Rohe was responsible for many of the world’s most important designs in architecture, furniture, lighting, and modern design philosophy.  Such important designs as the Barcelona Pavilion, the Seagram Building in New York, and the Farnsworth House cemented his name as a legend of modern classic design.

This reproduction of Mies van der Rohe’s Cantilever Cane Chair (MR10) is carefully handcrafted in Tuscany, Italy.  Both the cane and hide leather versions are finished in polished chrome.

Materials: Tubular chrome side chair with a cane seat and back. Shown here with the .  This chair uses a woven natural rush cane for its seat and back.  These natural materials are strong and durable.  Due to the nature of rush bark cane, there is color variation in the cane itself which is considered natural.  With proper care, cane chairs can last up to 25 years.
